How to Make the Most of Your Living Space on a Budget

Living in a small space can be freeing. For some people, it’s the only option they have due limited resources; for others, it’s a conscious decision to downsize and minimize. For everyone living in a small space, it means lower housing payments and less space to maintain. The only downside is the lack of storage to keep all of your things, but there are creative and budget-friendly ways to maximize your space.

A smaller home is already going to save you money with a lower mortgage payment, lower utility bills (the smaller the house, the cheaper it is to heat or cool), and fewer rooms to spend money furnishing. What’s more, it’ll also save you time on cleaning. Use the money that you’re saving from reduced mortgage payments to invest in turning your home into a great space with clever storage design.

Built-in Storage – Just because a house comes with little storage doesn’t mean it will always be that way. You can create more storage by building shelves into the walls or under the stairs. You can also purchase storage beds with drawers underneath rather than buying an expensive dresser that will take up extra space in the bedroom.

Shelves – If you don’t have much closet and cabinet space, try storing smaller things on shelves. An open shelf with a bunch of knick-knacks can look messy and crowded, but you can buy baskets to store things that you don’t want to see. If coordinated nicely, the baskets themselves can become functional, decorative pieces. Beyond the traditional paper coupons that you find in the mail, sites for home improvement and housing goods have cashback opportunities to give you money back when you spend it on your storage solutions.

Convertible Furniture

Two-in-One Pieces – Perhaps you don’t have room for much furniture, but you still enjoy the utility of having multiple furniture pieces. Convertible pieces that can be used for more than one purpose could be your best option. For example, purchase a sofa that turns into a sleeper bed for the guest room or a crib that can become a toddler bed as your child grows (buy once, use for years).

Compact furniture – One of the best ways to maximize your space without sacrificing the functionality of your furniture is to purchase compact pieces. Consider buying or building ladder desks with ascending shelves. Install a fold-out bed and a floating desk that tucks away neatly into the wall when it’s not in use. If you have a small kitchen area, you can still have a dining table without requiring a separate room. There are plenty of stylish dining tables with a drop-leaf design and dining sets with chairs that tuck underneath the table to save room.

Make What You Can and Buy the Rest Online

There’s no better way to save money on quality home goods than to make them yourself. If you have crafty skills, tools, and tutorials, you can make just about any simple thing that your home needs. For more complex items, shopping for furniture and storage solutions online could be the most cost-effective route. The internet gives you more options to choose from than most brick-and-mortar retailers.

It takes a little creativity, some planning, and elbow grease to turn your house into the ideal living space for you, but the goal is certainly attainable. Don’t let the fear of costs scare you into not trying. Once you know how to cut costs and save, it’s worth it to put some money into making your place more livable. Tackle one room at a time and slowly watch your home become what you want it to be.
